While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing next year’s spring/summer collections during this month’s London Fashion Week.
So what we will be wearing next spring/summer?
Cash strapped fashionistas will be pleased to hear that maxi skirts and dresses will continue to be a key trend for S/S 2011. For day Acne models wore slouchy jersey style printed styles, and designer Holy Futon wowed the fashion pack with building prints and tribal maxis. Julien Macdonald showcased evening wear with pastel coloured ruffed chiffon styles, along with Erdem’s amaryllis prints andMatthew Williamson’s maxis which were belted at the waist.
Other key trends for Spring/Summer include:
Fringing and feathers
Pringle showcased this trend with fringed tops and shoes, while Betty Jackson pulled out all the stops with her black ostrich feather trousers as did Matthew Williamson with his bejewelled, tasseled purple,black and cream dress, fringed skirts, scarves and metallic skirt with peacock feathers. And not to forget Mark Fast’s tropical coloured tassels on simple coloured skirts, dresses.
Florals
Floral designs were particularly popular this LFW. Clements Ribeiro’s easy to wear clashing floral prints in multiple shades appeared on dresses, skirts teamed with stripped tops and even platform wedges. Paul Smith’s collection saw a floral playsuit and suit jackets with flower printed lining. While Jaeger presented bold floral print dresses accentuated with a skinny belt.
Biker
At the Burberry Prorsum show models showcased leather biker jackets, trousers and neutral macs embellished with metal spikes and studs. Quilted leather jackets in black, silver and green, silver leather trousers, leather coats, wide belts with chains attached and Leopard prints and snakeskin also featured.
Seventies
We may be in the 21st century but next Spring/Summer everyone will be wearing styles made popular in the seventies. Retro knitted tank tops and flared trousers made an appearance on the catwalks this LFW thanks to Giles and Henry Holland whose pale denim bell bottom flares adorned with patchwork stars and teamed with platforms were particularly reminiscent of the era. The seventies theme was continued in Topshop’s Unique show,featuring skinny bell bottoms and bell sleeved tops.
Androgyny
Trousers have become popular again this autumn/winter and designers including Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith continued this trend during LFW S/S 2011. For a twist on the traditional, Westwood’s showcased low, slung on the crotch trousers which revealed floral print boy boxers. Paul Smith re-created his classic men’s suit for women with skinny silver tailored trousers and blazers with delicate floral lining.
Royal blue
Over half of the collections at LFW featured royal blue proving blue is the new black. From Issa’s draped Grecian style dresses teamed with diamond encrusted turbans, to Amanda Wakeley’s bandage dresses and long shift dresses.
